Francesca Borrelli was born in Naples, Italy, in 1970. She was graduated from the University of Naples Federico II, Italy. She received the Pharmacy degree and became specialized in officinal plants from the University of Naples Federico II, Italy, in 1994 and 1997, respectively. In addition, she obtained her Ph.D. degree in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Naples Federico II in 2001. During her Ph.D., she spent a period in the Department of Surgery, King's College Hospital Medical School, London, UK (October 1998-October 1999). From September 2001 to March 2002, she has worked in the Department of Complementary Medicine, School of Postgraduate Medicine and Health Sciences, Exeter (Devon), UK conducting research into complementary medicine. From April 2002 to April 2003, she has worked in the Department of Experimental Pharmacology of the University of Naples Federico II, Naples, Italy. In 2003, Borrelli has spent a period in the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, Medical University of Lubeck, Germany. Moreover, she presently works as a Researcher at the School of Pharmacy (University of Naples Federico II). Her research work is focused on the therapeutic relevance of plant-derived compounds in the field of the gastrointestinal pathologies (IBD, cancer, etc.) and on the signal transduction mechanisms involved in their action. Furthermore, Borrelli works in the complementary medicines. She's written several reviews on this topic.
