Inflammation in Retinal Disease

Description

Ocular inflammation and its related complications are important causes of vision loss in a wide array of retinal diseases. While the inflammatory etiology of posterior uveitis has long been recognized, recent research efforts have revealed the critical role of inflammation underlying the pathophysiology of other diseases of the posterior segment, including retinal vein occlusion, diabetic retinopathy, Irvine-Gass syndrome, and age-related macular degeneration. Inflammation may contribute to breakdown of the blood-retinal barrier, vascular leakage, and macular edema, as well as the growth of new and abnormal blood vessels. Knowledge and understanding of the role of inflammation in these conditions has led to the development and use of anti-inflammatory therapies in the treatment of these retinal diseases.

We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that will add to the growing body of literature on the role of inflammation in retinal diseases as well as the evolving treatment paradigms for addressing the underlying inflammatory processes contributing to vision loss. We are interested in articles that explore the role of inflammation in posterior segment diseases and share new insights based on clinical trials. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Inflammation in the aging retina
  • Inflammation and the pathophysiology of retinal diseases (e.g., diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and retinal vein occlusion)
  • Intraocular cytokines/growth factors and retinal diseases
  • Novel therapeutic targets of anti-inflammatory therapy in retinal diseases
  • Recent advances in ocular drug delivery for inflammatory retinal diseases
  • Role of surgery on inflammatory retinal diseases

Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal's Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/iji/guidelines/.
