Advances in Polymer Electrolyte Membranes and Their Nanocomposites for PEMFC

This issue is now closed for submissions.

Description

There has been breakthrough in the application of PEMFCs to a fuel cell vehicle (FCV) by Toyota in late 2014. Toyota successfully reduced the size and cost of the PEMFC stack in its first sedan, the Mirai. In order to expedite the commercialization of PEMFC, it is essential to further improve the properties of perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes and/or develop less expensive hydrocarbon membranes with equivalent conductivities and properties.

This special issue is intended to present and discuss theoretical and experimental discoveries and technological achievements for the commercialization of fuel cell, with a focus on polymer electrolyte membranes.

We cordially invite investigators to contribute review and original papers describing recent findings in the field of polymer electrolyte membranes for use in PEMFC, DMFC, and alkaline fuel cells.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Polymer electrolyte membranes including cation and anion exchange membranes
  • Synthesis and design of polymer electrolyte membranes
  • Manipulating membrane morphology for optimum fuel cell performance
  • Nanocomposites and blends: their composition, structure, and properties
  • Computer simulation and theoretical investigation of conduction mechanism in nanochannels
  • Probing the nano/molecular structure of fuel cell membranes
  • Characterization and performance of membrane-electrode assembly (MEA)
  • Chemical and mechanical stability issues of polymer electrolytes (either in situ or ex situ)
