Analysis and Remediation of Pollutants in Water and Soil

Description

Water and soil are critical for human survival. However, various pollutants with different concentrations have contaminated water and soil due to the rapid development of human society. The occurrence of pollutants in water and soil can cause economic damage, human disease, and ecological destruction. Therefore, analysis and remediation techniques for pollutants in water and soil are in urgent need of thorough discussion.

Some conventional pollutants, such as heavy metals and nutrients, have been widely investigated. However, quick and cheap analysis techniques for these pollutants, especially on-site and in-situ analysis, are still a significant challenge. Emerging contaminants such as endocrine-disrupting chemicals pose high risks to humans and eco-systems even at very low concentrations, so novel analysis techniques for detecting trace pollutants in water or soil are also in need of deep investigation. Efficient analysis of pollutants in soil is still a challenge as complicated pre-treatment is generally required for analysis. Remediation of polluted water and soil is also critical for the sustainability of human society, and so effective remediation techniques are urgently needed. Questions remain around the economy of novel remediation techniques, as well as the fate of the pollutants after remediation and the variety of factors that could affect the process.

This Special Issue aims to help us obtain important and useful information on pollutants in water and soil, with a focus on analysis and remediation techniques. We hope to provide support for environmental protection, and we invite contributions of original research and review articles reporting new methods or techniques for detecting pollutants in water or soil, as well as risk assessment of pollutants in water and soil. Research or review articles targeting the remediation of polluted soil or water are also welcome.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Novel techniques or methods for analyzing pollutants in water and soil, including heavy metals, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, nutrients, persistent organic pollutants, antibiotics, pesticides, microplastics, and antibiotic resistance genes
  • Occurrence of pollutants in water and soil, in particular the spatiotemporal distribution of pollutants
  • Transport and fate of pollutants in water and soil
  • Ecological or health risk assessment on pollutants in water and soil, including new methods and risk evaluations on an international scale
  • Adsorption and desorption techniques for removing pollutants in water and soil
  • Biological removal of pollutants
  • Advanced oxidation processes (AOP) for removing pollutants, including Fenton, ozonation/catalytic ozonation, photocatalytic oxidation, supercritical water oxidation, and other AOP techniques
  • Electrochemical techniques for removing pollutants in water or soil.
  • In-situ remediation techniques for polluted water bodies and soil
  • Other new methods and techniques for removing trace pollutants in water and soil
